A few months ago, I had a friend start talking to me about how life was going. They mentioned how they had a lot on their plate, and no matter what they did, they felt like they were either forgetting half the things they had to get done or just spinning their wheels. Frankly, they had me at the first part of that conversation, and I was sitting there waiting for them to finish before I exclaimed:
“FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT’S HOLY, USE NOTION!!!!!”
I’m fairly sure they already knew I use Notion like a maniac, but it’s always nice to get a minute to talk about a program I use to basically run my whole life.
1) Task lists are the easiest way to track your life
Whenever I talk to people about to-do lists, the majority of them either go pale at the thought of all the stuff that could go on their to-do list, or they eventually tune me out because I’m a big to-do list nerd and I like talking about the possibilities. That being said, you’re here too… so I’m going to assume you’re interested.
I love using Notion for my daily to-do list because if anything pops into my head that needs to get done, I can quickly toss it on the list. If I schedule it for another date, I don’t have to worry about it again until it pops up on my daily wins list (AKA the stuff I only need to do today).
While there are lots of to-do list apps that do this, they usually have only that one function. And while some of the things on my list require me to leave my Notion environment to actually do them, I have Notion permanently open on all of my devices—so seeing what’s on my list has become pretty habitual for me now.
2) Planning ahead has never been simpler
I like planning out my year and any projects I want to get done throughout it. Notion helped me build a database that not only had overall goals for each year and the big tasks I’d need to do to achieve those goals, but it also let me link those things to my daily to-do list—so I could see everything connected together.
(I recognize that when I said I was a to-do list nerd, that was an undersell… but come on, this is fun!)
Those connections let me scope out projects properly and plan for what needs to be done, and when.
3) Loads of professional capabilities
I follow Notion on LinkedIn (no surprises there), and I keep seeing and hearing about more and more corporations using Notion for their day-to-day operations.
In my own little sphere of influence, I use Notion to run my entire life. And one of my kids, inspired by this, asked for their own Notion page that they can use to run their life.
Having a central wiki for your entire life can be extremely helpful for your organization because it means there’s a centralized source of truth for your company.
I’ve been using Notion for a few years now, and I have yet to scrape the bottom of the barrel for what it can do. I’ve also started using their AI (which may be a future post on its own…) which is only adding to the overall experience.
What I particularly love about this program is that since I’ve started using it, I’ve found a few more people in my life who are also using it—and when we compare notes, I find they’re using it completely differently from how I am. Not better or worse, just different.
I like that Notion isn’t a one-trick pony that can only be used for one thing. I like that it can be different for everyone. While yes, having a program with such open-ended functionality can make it harder to learn in the beginning, there are lots of instructional videos (AHEM… and a few decent blog posts) that can either show you how to use it or give you good ideas that can act as a jumping-off point.
My big plan this month is to talk about the various bits of software I use to run my life, so it only makes sense to talk about the big one first. I love how diverse the functionality of Notion is. Seriously, if you need something to help organize your life and keep you on track, give Notion a go. It could be very helpful for you.
Are you willing to give Notion a go?
