Olympic Hype up

Ok guys, holy crap! I’m really excited about the Olympics this winter. To be clear, I’m always really excited about the Olympics. I like watching my nation compete against the others and seeing the best of Canada “go for Gold.” This year, however, it’s a whole different deal.

This year, we have VR.

I just downloaded the CBC Virtual Reality app and on it, there is a preview of the types of views we’ll be able to experience while watching the Olympic games. I’m telling you, it was so completely awesome. during the preview, you went through the experience with a smattering of different athletes and their “road to the Olympics” type journeys. There would be a scene of a girls hockey team getting psyched up and going on the Ice, there were a couple of people warming up in a training area, a snowboarder on a trick course, and a ski jump (just to name a few).

with the VR view on my iPhone, I was IN THE EXPERIENCE with them. I was effectively sitting on the hockey bench with the girls who went out on the ice, I was able to look around the training room that the athlete was training in WHILE he was training. I was standing next to the sledge course as a bobsledder went by, and then WAS IN A BOBSLED MAKING THE TURNS!!!! Lastly, I was able to see what it was like going down an Olympic ski jump, it actually took my breath away. It was so incredible getting the full 360° experience, being able to look left and right, up and down (while holding my phone in front of my face mind you) and the action was continuing on.

I remember trying VR when I was a kid, I had to stand in a special booth, wear the goggles and hold the controllers and in order to move, I had to press buttons on one of the controllers. It was a bit clunky and not at all helped by the 8-bit graphics. Now, however, it’s a whole other ball game. From what I was able to get from just the preview you will be in the experience with the athletes, which has SUCH potential.

I like watching as much Olympics as I can. Now I’ll be able to see them like I’m there. I’m totally stoked about this.

If you are planning on watching the Opening Ceremonies tonight, or any of the Olympic events over the next couple weeks, I would HIGHLY recommend you download the CBC Virtual Reality app which is available for iOS and Android. For my American readers, I know that NBC has a similar application so that you can see your athletes compete as well.

For my longtime Twitter followers, you may know that I tend to LIve tweet some sports events. For sure I will be tweeting regularly during the Olympics when I can. You can follow me on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn AND Twitter @jasonlovefiles.
