I mentioned earlier this week in my Post about Conquering the Todo List Mountain (Hyperlink) that I would talk today about the program that I use to keep my to-do list in order. I have to admit, I stumbled on Wunderlist a couple of years ago and after trying it for a little while I found myself completely dependent on it to be able to keep my life in order. I should probably mention on the outset that I am not affiliated with Wunderlist, and while I put a link to their site in this article, if you sign up (which I do recommend) I will not be getting any kind of commission from them. I’m just a big fan of their program.
Cool, business stuff over with. Now, I really love Wunderlist. It was one of the main programs that I used in order to get myself organized in order to start this blog. I am now at the point where I would be totally lost without Wunderlist. I have three main reasons why I keep using it;
1) It keeps all my tasks where I can see them – When I say all my tasks I MEAN all of them. Before I embraced my inner “ToDo list nerdiness” I would forget to do things all the time. It would make me feel terrible because I would always say things like “I should’ve remembered that!” and “I really wish I could have remembered that!” Now, whenever I need to get something done I throw it on my Wunderlist. What’s great is that it allows you the ability to keep separate lists depending on the subject matter. I have lists of books I want to read, I have one for my blog, a personal list, and a list of Apps that I need to look into if I want to review them. I even have a grocery list so that when I go to the store I know EXACTLY what it is that I’m looking for. The possibilities are endless.
2) It’s cross-platform – For any of you who have read my previous posts you know that Cross-platform ability is one of the most important things that I look for in an app is its ability to work on Mac, PC, mobile and over the internet seamlessly. It’s critically important if you are presenting an app to the market nowadays you need to be able to have compatibility with both Mac and PC’s, any mobile device and should have some level of cloud service with it so that people can access their information from any Internet-accessible device, anywhere in the world. Luckily Wunderlist is one of those products! I really like the fact that if I’m sitting at my desk, and I think about something that I need to get done when I walk into the house at the end of the day, I can see it on my phone. Also (and I have done this) one of the other pieces of its amazing cross platform ability is how quickly it syncs. I have been sitting at my desk with the Wunderlist app open on my computer and on my phone, and after I click a task as “completed” on my phone the computer does the same instantaneously and vice versa. It’s great to be able to have that level of reliability in this program to know that your tasks will always be up to date.
3) Calendar integration – One of the key factors in not letting your to-do list overwhelm you is the ability to assign dates. Wunderlist is brilliant at this for three different reasons. Firstly, when you assign a date to any task, you effectively move it to a different week (assuming it’s a long-term list) and with Wunderlist you have all of your tasks with Dates pulled together both in a “today” list and a “this week” list. No matter where your tasks are coming from, if you have multiple lists or just one, I tend to look at the tasks for today. This usually means that I only have a couple things to get done which reduces my stress levels drastically. The second reason that I like the calendaring feature of Wunderlist is that if you have a repetitive task that you have to do (say prepare a report every month) you can set up your Wunderlist task to repeat every day, week or month, so you’ll never miss a task again. Lastly (and this is with Google for sure, but I haven’t tested other formats) there is actual calendar integration, so if you prefer to have your to-do list show up in your calendar it will show up there as well.
Knowing all your tasks that you have to complete is really important. Even more important is being able to have a place where you can keep all those tasks that you can rely on. If you are looking for an App to do this, Wunderlist is absolutely the app that I would recommend.
What do you think about to-do lists? are you more likely to start one now?
