I had intended to do this post as a “5 gifts that would be awesome for your tech nerd at home” as a subtle way of putting out a Christmas list for myself, but as I’ve been thinking about this post, the cool stuff I wanted to talk about is the stuff that I have and love anyway. I look through a lot of “top 40 gifts for your tech nerd” lists, and they are either things like a coffee maker or so random that you would have to actually know how to use the thing before getting it. Personally, the gifts I would give would be the easy-to-use things that make your life better.
1) reMarkable tablet – I will praise my reMarkable tablet until the end of the world. For anyone who hasn’t seen my plethora of blog posts about this incredible device, the reMarkable tablet is a digital tablet that will transform your experience with paper. I started using it about 8 years ago, and at the time, I was a serious note-taker. My issue was that when the notebook ran out of paper, I had to switch to another notebook. Being the “out of sight, out of mind” kind of guy that I am, when I swapped over to a new notebook, I would totally forget anything that happened in the last one. reMarkable allows me to keep all my notes in one place, accessible at any time. If you have a serious note-taker in your life, reMarkable is a total lay-up.
2) Theragun – Granted, this is a device to help your Physical life, but it’s still pretty cool. As an office worker, I spend a lot of time sitting, which makes me stiff. My Theragun is a massager that loosens my joints and makes me feel much more flexible. So, just in case you were wondering about the technology side of this product, yes, there is an app for it. The companion app for the Theragun is actually quite remarkable because it offers different pre-programmed settings and features that let you properly massage different muscle groups. Also, the newest Theragun has a heated pad, and let me tell you, heat on a sore leg or back is absolutely glorious.
3) Beyond Chargers SnapCharge Power Bank – Sometimes I buy random things off Social Media. Sometimes the stuff I get ends up being complete crap, and sometimes it’s wildly useful. Luckily for me, the Snapcharge was the latter, rather than the former. I always have issues when I go out for the day, and I know I won’t be near a charger. I get nervous when my phone drops below 50%, simply because of previous experiences where my phone would look like it had 50% and then suddenly die. The reason for the phone’s sudden death was that it was older, and the display didn’t accurately show my battery percentage. In either case, when my current phone drops below 50, I can attach my snapcharger and it brings it right back up. It’s so small and light that it takes nothing for me to carry. I genuinely love something that allows me to use my phone for longer without being bulky or hard to handle.
4) NuPhy keyboard — I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned my favourite keyboard before. I’m a writer, and as such, I do A LOT of writing. Personally, I like a keyboard that is comfortable and makes my writing easier. Typically, this means mechanical keyboards. The only issue I have with them is that 99% of them are backlit, so you feel like you’re staring into a strobe light. For me, that’s quite distracting. I like the NuPhy keyboards because they have comfortable keys, are easy to connect via Bluetooth to both Windows and PC, and have minimal strobing lights so you can focus on writing. I love the feel of my Nuphy keyboard so much that I not only bought one for my home and work office, but also a portable version that I have paired with my iPad so I can write while travelling.
5) Hearth Calendar – something that I have started to struggle with in my personal life is knowing what everyone in my house is doing on any given day. The kids are becoming more active in their in-school and afterschool clubs, my Wife is getting more and more things scheduled, and even I am becoming busier these days. Sometimes it’s hard to know who is where and when. A few months ago, I learned about the Heath calendar, and it’s totally changed the game. It’s a wall calendar system that lets us link all our calendars to one spot. This means that whenever I make a new appointment or set up a meeting, it will appear on my Hearth calendar. If one of my kids is going to be late one day after school, I don’t have to worry about where they are, nor do I have to be the kind of parent who texts them 37 times to find out. I mean, I might anyway…but I won’t HAVE to… 😁. I also like it because it allows us to assign chores and todos to different users, and each of us can check off our own todos on the Hearth device itself or in the calendar app. The Hearth display is an excellent system for keeping up with a busy family life.
This is just a few of the cool things on the market today. If you have a tech nerd in your life who needs to get something upgraded, or even if you need something cool for yourself, this list is a solid place to start. I’m all about technology that makes your life better, and I think this list is a fairly comprehensive list of tech that can do exactly that. If you’re looking for a gift for a tech nerd (Who isn’t me ^Sad face^), then these would be some exciting options.
What are you buying for the tech person in your life?
