The Apple Event was all about Portability

I like Apple. Since I started using some of their products and was slowly converted to everything, I have been a big fan of what they have. Not simply their products, although that is a big part of it. I’m also a fan of how they present their products. The language they use is always the most extreme version that they can. Everything they change is “revolutionary” or “Class leading.” Understandably, they want to use whatever they can to promote their products, and sounding excited about them is key. I don’t believe I’m tired of Apple events by any stretch of the imagination, but I have seen enough to see a pattern. At the same time, I did start watching the event with a certain amount of anticipation. I was a little concerned that it would be a case of them simply peddling the same thing but slightly different. Luckily for me, they brought out some exciting stuff.

1) The theme seemed to be about portability – What I find interesting about this particular event was that the whole thing was about what is in and on your hand. No mention of their computers or iPods. It was all about the Phone, Watch and AirPods. I’ll be honest; I love my Airpods. I use them every single day. It’s great. Until now, I was never really interested in the AirPods pro. The only reason was that I was concerned that with the Noise cancelling, I would be unable to hear the sounds around me. I recognize that not being able to hear anything else is the whole point of Noise cancelling headphones, but I have always been concerned that I would, for example, cross the road and not hear the car coming to hit me. However, the AirPod Pros have been outfitted with “adaptive Noise cancelling.” What this means is that deafening noises (they used a jackhammer in the event video) will be lowered in volume, but you will still be aware. I’m not confident how this will work for the Noise Cancelling, but I will try it out. I have ordered my pair of AirPod Pros, and you better believe that I will be reporting back on how that works out.

2) New Apple Watch Ultra– I have to say, Whenever I think to myself, “Apple’s done all they can in that market,” they go a step further. The Apple Watch 8 looks super cool, don’t get me wrong, but I’m intrigued by the iPhone Ultra. To be clear, the Ultra is digging into the Physical fitness applications you can utilize with the watch. The idea is that if you’re going to climb a mountain, run a marathon (or four), or do some other incredible physical feat, you will definitely need this watch. The construction is beefier, the Battery will last longer, and it will give you more comprehensive health data as you happen to be doing your thing. This all sounds cool in theory, but for 90% of those who are simple desk jockeys who want the apple watch for the day-to-day stuff (I include myself in this one, to be precise), the Ultra may be a bit overkill.

3) Health and security was a big feature – In the last few Apple events, security was always a significant feature. With Cyber security becoming a more prominent feature, to say nothing of people’s data needing to be as secure as possible, having data security is incredibly important. A very cool feature brought up was the health features that they brought out this time. The two that they mentioned were Crash Detection and Emergency SOS. Crash detection is the next evolution of their previous fall detection. The premise is that if you are in a car crash in the middle of nowhere and unable to call for emergency services, then the apple watch will “have your back” by contacting emergency services for you. This can be a cool feature, and when I was driving a long distance to and from work, I’m sure I would love to have something like this. The really neat feature, though, was the Emergency SOS. The way that it works is that no matter where you are, you should be able to link up with a satellite which would allow you to send texts or make calls to emergency services. I’ll be honest; I have a cottage where my phone usually doesn’t work, so having this as an emergency option is actually a good thing.

It always amazes me that whenever I have an apple event to look forward to, I always seem to think I know what I can expect. Some cool intro, the newest version of various devices, and perhaps some cool products which are new are reasonably standard fair at Apple events. While that did happen, I also usually find some kind of product that does make me sit back and think how innovative Apple is. I feel like one of these days, I’ll be able to predict what they come out with, but there is always something cool I never expected. The SOS feature will certainly help a few people in the future, but for now, I have to look forward to my new set of AirPods, which I will be reporting back on.
