Reporting Back on The Tred

As I’m writing this, the Tred is still in the process of being recalled and fixed, but I’ve had enough experience with it that I think I can still talk about it. For quite a while, I’ve been enjoying a good walk around my neighbourhood. Typically when I used to do it, I would get up at 5 AM and walk around my neighbourhood. Sadly, because I live in Canada, there were times when it was simply too cold for me to get out there, or it was raining, or there would be something else that would prevent me from going for a long walk. If I couldn’t get out, we happen to have an elliptical, which would suffice for my cardio workout. I did do use the Peloton bike for a while, but frankly, the seat hurt my butt too much. That’s why I was SO excited when I first heard that the Peloton Tred was coming to Canada.

QUICK LEGAL MUMBOJUMBO; While I am a Peloton member and I enjoy the product, I am in no way affiliated with Peloton. This review is because I’m a big fan, and if you get a peloton because of it, then I’m happy for you, but I get no financial benefit from it. Are we all good here? Sweet….ON WITH THE POST!

1) Love to walk and run – I’ll be honest, walking is one of my favourite ways of getting exercise. Even if it’s just wandering around my neighbourhood with a podcast in my ear talking to me about whatever, It’s a great experience. The problem for me is that (certainly where I live) there are a few months where it gets very cold outside, so just going for a stroll can be a bit tricky—having the Tred did come quite in handy when I wanted to go for a run or even just a walk.

2) The Peloton experience is awesome – I have talked about Peloton before, but I need to reiterate how amazing the Peloton experience is. Here’s the thing, working out sucks. Particularly as an (ahem)”oversized gentleman,” working out is hard on joints and stuff and occasionally leaves me with the feeling like I’ve spent a lot of energy for not a lot of payoff. I like Peloton because while you’re working out, the trainers are constantly encouraging you and making you want to work harder. I’ve worked with trainers live who have not done this. To be clear, 90% of the trainers I’ve worked with have been excellent, but I have had an experience or two where I felt like I was wasting their time, which was awful. The trainers at Peloton, while virtual, definitely give the impression that they want YOU (yes, YOU!) to succeed.

3) Why I like running vs. biking – the reason is simple enough, I did the bike for about a year, and while all the Facebook groups tell you that you’ll get used to it, I never really did. I know that there are people out there who swear by the bike and how amazing a workout it can be. I get it; I’ve done many of the bike workouts that people are talking about. While it’s a good workout, I never really got excited about wanting to use the bike. Seat issue aside, I have always been more of a walker than a biker.

When the announcement that the Tred was coming to Canada first came out, I was really excited. It meant that I would be able to get all the benefits of the Peloton system without having to worry about my butt getting too sore. I know you’re probably thinking, “Um dude….why not just go outside for a walk?” Bear in mind when it got announced, it was early January and very cold outside. I’ll look forward to when the Tred is “safe” again, but for now, the weather is lovely, and I think I might just go take my Peloton app and earbuds for a walk.

How do you like to get your exercise?
