If you’re looking for a way to entertain yourself for a good long while or looking for some interactive escapist adventure, MMORPG’s are what you’re looking for. For those of you who’ve never heard that term before Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (or MMORPG’s) are online games where you can act as a character within a fictional world. You can get your character to develop specific skills, go on quests and adventures, and go on multiplayer missions for particular goals. There are many different games like this out there. I’ll reference World of Warcraft (or WoW) simply because it’s the one that I have played in the past, and I have the most experience with it.
1) The storylines are great – Something that I’m always amazed by MMORPG’s is the detailed storylines that all the players and characters have to go through. Indeed, depending on what type of character you are and what profession you have, the missions will be different, but they will also contribute to the main story like that all the other players are working on. In WoW, there different storylines depending on your race (Dwarf, Elf, Human, etc.) your specialization (Wizard, Hunter, Priest, etc.) and your profession (Blacksmith, Tailer, Leatherworker, Herbalist etc.). All of these missions help you move your story along. These various storylines gain you more experience points (or XP), and the more XP you get, the higher level you get to be. The higher level you get, the more missions and areas and things you can do.
2) You learn cooperation – There are so many other players who are playing these types of games at any given time (and at the same time as you) so, interaction is bound to happen. Whether it’s doing a dungeon raid with a few friends or as simple as asking another player for directions, cooperation with others is a part of MMORPG’s. On many occasions, I have done whole missions with some friends and people I have met in the game. Sometimes when you’re going on a mission, and someone has just completed the same one, they are willing to show you around if you’re unable to find your way. Even my wife and I have spent a few evenings going on quests together. I have found that working with others in the game can be rewarding on many different levels.
3) It can be a great mental break – The past eight months or so have been seriously stressful and terrible for our collective anxiety levels. A little escapism would do us all a little good. With the stresses of day to day life, it’s essential, and I would say necessary to have an outlet where you can take out any frustrations and release your stress. Most of these games are so far outside of our normal melue that it takes us completely out of our lives, which makes us even more focused when we go back to our real lives.
We all have ways of entertaining ourselves. MMORPG’s like WOW is just one among many. If you have the time and the energy, I would highly advise checking one of these games out. As I said at the beginning of the post, I’m partial to WoW, but I’m confident that each has its good sides. I do feel the need real quick to say that these games CAN become addictive where you spend too much time on them, so make sure that you please play responsibly and take breaks every once and a while. If you’re able to do that, MMORPG’s can be a fantastic way to take a break from your day to day life.
