I was chatting with one of my rock star subscribers a couple months ago. We got to chatting about how there are certain people in the world who don’t have a grasp on technology. For the sake of full disclosure here, my subscriber is an App programmer and I deal with Digital information systems. Having a conversation about this type of topic between us was like two Catholics discussing religion. THAT BEING SAID, I found myself defending non-tech-ie people…which was, different for me.
The point she made was that she couldn’t understand how can smart people could be so intelligent and completely useless with computers.
“It’s all about interest.” was my only reply.
It doesn’t matter how smart you are in this world, if you have no interest in the subject matter then you will be useless at it. This blog is about being able to Organize your Digital Life, This is not a cooking blog. I have nothing against cooks I’m not one myself. My wife banned me from cooking when we were in our twenties when I burnt rice while cooking it. I’m a smart guy, and I like eating, I am not that interested in the ins and outs of how food gets made. Because of this, I’m quite terrible at even the most basic tasks of food prep. I can make toast and Maccaroni and Cheese….This is the extent of my culinary skills. There are people in the world who either don’t know or care to know the ins and outs of digital file management. That’s what I’m here for.
Your level of interest defines what you do. One of the greatest lessons that I ever learned was “do what you love and love what you do.” It took me a long time to find my way into Information Management, and I went through a couple of different career paths to get there. When I did get to it, I completely fell in love with my work. I have also been writing since I was 16 years old, so writing is something else that I have been in love with for a while. When I started working on Information Management I never would have thought that I would be able to combine those two passions, but here we are.
If you’re not that great with knowing the best methods of organizing your digital life, I get it. I do. I can guarantee that there is something out there that there is something that you will be good at. The reason I’m bringing this up is that being digital and organizing your digital life is something that is becoming more commonplace. I have been giving you tips and tricks that will help you Organize your Digital Life.
I have also found that no one is good at everything. When I was growing up I got asked the question “Would you rather be excellent at one thing (and thus useless at everything else) or be “just ok” at everything?” My initial response to this was that I would want to be “just ok” at everything. My thinking at the time was that if I was a “jack of all trades” I would for sure be able to get work and be able to do something.
One of the lessons that I have learned over the course of my career is that I was wrong. While you can be good at lots of things, generally speaking, you will find that you are great at one thing. I’m happy that not everyone is good at everything. There are people in the world who (like myself) and not fantastic with numbers, which is why I don’t do my own taxes. There are people out there who are not fantastic with figuring out how to make their computers work, which explains how I’m employable. The fact of the matter is that I love doing what I do. It’s interesting and challenging and sometimes it frustrates the hell out of me. Figuring out a solution to the problems that I get presented, for me, is half the fun.
Not everyone is good at everything. Most of us are only good at a handful of things. I understand that there are people who either don’t know or don’t understand how to access the benefits of cloud computing like I do. It’s why I’m here. It’s why this blog is here. Once you find that you like doing something do it with all your heart, and you will find that people notice that. if you’re lucky, you will figure out a way to get paid to do what you love. Then, as Confucius said, You’ll never work a day in your life.
What are you most interested in? are you really good at it?

Sounds like a Gr. 7 Philosophy class…
The Real Person!
That’s an interesting thought. I’m sure that advances in Technology and implications therein would be an interesting subject for a Philosophy class.
