Why I went wired for my Home Office

I have talked many times before about the benefits of wireless technology. I still maintain that there are many advantages to having wireless devices like ensuring a far less cluttered desk. Here’s the thing, I went with wired ancillary devices for my home office. On face value, this may sound hypocritical but bear with me here. There are several options for things like Keyboards and Mice and whatnot that come in both wired and wireless solutions. When I was in the process of setting my office up, I looked at a whack of different options and went with one that worked for me. For my Home office, I decided to go with a wired solution for a few different reasons.

1) No battery power required – My Home office is something that I don’t use regularly. I use my home office perhaps once a week on the weekends. During the week, I’m actually at work doing my job, so my home office stays empty. What does this have to do with Wired Vs. Wireless? Wireless devices do rely on battery power, and if the devices are not frequently used, then there is no point to having them I would rather not worry about how long it’s been since I’ve changed my batteries.

2) They will always work – Since there are no batteries, I know that it will still work. This made it so that there was one less thing that I had to worry about when I was working in my office. If I were to use my office every single day, I would be more tempted to go wireless, but because I’m usually only in my home office on weekends, It’s a safer choice to go with wired. There are loads of wireless options out there. For my iPad, as an example, I have a Bluetooth keyboard that I keep in a sleeve on the case. The only downside of doing this for a home office (in my opinion) is that you would have to be able to go into the Bluetooth settings every time you wanted to connect and disconnect. When they are wired into a central hub, it’s plug and play.

3) It’s just me (No standardization required) – In a professional environment, it’s usually needed to have some standardization of equipment. The reason for this is relatively simple; You need to be able to get one piece of equipment that will work the same for everyone. If you try and accommodate everyone’s wants and needs, then it will get to the point that it’s not affordable because you will never know how expensive a piece of equipment will be. Also, it’s unsustainable because to fix a machine when it goes wrong will be difficult if you need to fix things from who knows how many companies, then it can be much more difficult. Luckily as it’s just me, I can do more or less whatever I want, and I know how to fix, adjust and maintain my equipment.

I’m not knocking the use of wireless devices. I usually am the person who would advise using a wireless option. The thing of it is that for you to get the most bang for your buck, you need to be able to use the wireless devices regularly. The batteries on the market today are reliable, but knowing my luck I would go to my home office to work and they would die in the one time that there would be no extra batteries in my house. That’s why I like a corded mouse and keyboard for my home office. Also, because the keyboard is mechanical, but I will go into why that’s awesome in a couple of weeks.
