A few weeks back I put up a post about Wunderlist, which is the to-do list app that I use in my day to day life. I was since contacted via Twitter by Wunderlist after I put a tweet out about that very same program. They wanted to know how I used Wunderlist, and to me, that seemed like a great thing that I could talk about. First things first though;
WARNING LEGAL STUFF: You need to know that I’m not an affiliate of Wunderlist. I use their product, I like their product, but you can’t sign up to use Wunderlist through me. If you do, I get nothing but the satisfaction of knowing I was able to help you make a decision that helped you Organize your Digital Life.
1) Actual to-do lists – I have a lot of things to do and in some cases very limited time in which to do them. Keeping a to-do list of the stuff that I have to do helps to keep me on track. I keep todo lists for my personal life, my professional life, and stuff that I want to do for this blog. Anything I want to do for any of those three I write into a todo list, and if it’s important enough I set myself a due date, which means it will pop back up on me and remind me to get it done.
2) Yearly goals list – For the past couple of years I have set up a Yearly todo list. Stuff that I would like to do at one point or another throughout the year. Sometimes they are single events, but more often than not they are things that I will likely take the whole year to get done. One of the goals I have on my todo list for this year is to read five books. Sadly for me, I’m a bit of a slow reader (something I’m working on), and I’m trying to get myself to read more. I’m currently about 3 or 4 books in so I figure I should make my goal. Speaking of books…
3) Booklist – I like to keep a list of books that I want to read. I occasionally listen to a podcast which makes book recommendations, and when I’m listening, I usually write whatever book they’re talking about down on my list. The good news about that is that I have a wide variety of books that I think I want to read. The bad news is that it can look quite easily like a long list that I’ll never get done. The way I have solved this through using Wunderlist. Luckily you can quickly reorganize your todo list so done just that. I’ve got my books in the order that I think I want to read them. It makes it easy to go through, and when I’m done one book, I can just look on my list to see which one I have to pick up next. No stressing about what book to read next they’re all there in order. I also like putting notes about what I thought of the book and when I started reading and finished.
4) Shopping on my way home – I commute through the subway, and on my way home I pass a grocery store and a mall, so naturally, I get texts from my wife asking me to pick things up on the way home. I used to have a tough time remembering what it was that I was supposed to pick up. Once again, Wunderlist to my rescue. Whenever my wife texts me about something that I need to pick up on my way home I add it to my list. I can add it on my computer, and it will automatically update the list on my phone so that I have it when I’m on my way home.
5) Research purposes – I tend to do a lot of work for this blog, One of the things that I do is research the things that I talk about here. Sometimes there will be an app or a program that I will want to look into or try for myself. The problem that I had previously was that I would find an article talking about something I wanted to research and, being distracted I wouldn’t write it down somewhere and then forget later. Now I have a list of “apps to look into” which I use through Wunderlist. If ever I’m trying to look for something new to talk about on my blog, or even just a program I want to check out for myself, I look through my list and remember what I wanted that particular app for.
At the end of the day I’m a to-do list nerd, and while I realize that some of you aren’t, I still think that Wunderlist is worth checking out. There are many many MANY different apps that you can use for a digital to-do list, but I believe that Wunderlist is the best one to use. It’s critical to find an app that has a good look and feel for you and to find one with the options that you like to use, and for me, Wunderlist has all of those things.
What to do list app do you use? Would you consider switching?
